So… What’s This Tournament Thing?

What is the tournament?

The tournament is an AMAZING event that is hosted by one of our Team Chip schools. It’s one of the best and safest ways for students to apply the material they’ve been learning on the mat in a variety of different competitive divisions! It’s also a great way to meet and interact with Team Chip students and Instructors from all the other locations!

What is an open house and do I need to go?

The Open House happens the Friday evening before the actual tournament on Saturday, and takes place at the Host Location’s actual location. While it is not mandatory to attend the Open House, it is highly encouraged. Competitors can pick up their tournament packets early, mingle with other students, as well as get in a bit of practice before the tournament.

Is my student / am I eligible for the tournament?

YES! All students of any age, rank, or size are eligible to compete! We have divisions for everyone, regardless of how long they’ve been training!

Will I/ my student like it?

Once again, YES! The tournaments are always highlights of the year, and are always something that students get excited about, time after time!

Does my kid have to do a tournament?

While students do not need to attend every tournament (though they are encouraged to!), they are required to compete in at least one tournament during their training time in order to be eligible to test for their Black Belt.

What events should I / my student do?

Whatever they want! Realistically, this is a conversation all students and parents should have with the Instructors at their home locations, as they will be able to help best determine what events will be appropriate for each student.

My kid doesn’t have sparring gear, should they spar?

Sparring gear is required for any student wanting to participate in sparring. Required gear includes Team Chip approved headgear, boxing gloves, shin pads, mouthpiece, and an athletic cup.

How is breaking scored?

Breaking is scored on a highest number and percentage basis. If one student breaks more boards than the other students in the division, then that student wins. If two students break the same number of boards, whichever student broke the highest percentage of what was set wins. For example, if one student breaks 9 boards out of 10 (90%), and one student breaks 9 boards out of 9 (100%), the 9 of 9 beats 9 of 10.

How many boards or bricks should we purchase?

This is a conversation that each student should have with the Instructors at their home locations. Extra breaking materials can always be purchased at the tournament, should that be necessary.

What is the Trifecta?

The Trifecta is the completion of all three Team Chip tournaments in a calendar year. Should a student compete in all of the tournaments in a calendar year, they earn a Trifecta for that year, along with some pretty amazing prizes! Each consecutive Trifecta earned gets you even more! Keep in mind that missing a single tournament resets your Trifecta status.
