Why Chores Matter More Than “Checking a Box”
As a parent, would you want to know if your child showed up on the day an assignment was due without doing the work, hurriedly scribbled it down on scratch paper, and expected a perfect grade, or even asked you to do it for them?
Most parents start their kids in martial arts to build discipline, respect, and initiative. Rushed, incomplete work does not reflect any of those qualities.
This is exactly what happens when Chores Lists become a last-minute check the box just to earn a belt. At Team Chip, we do not believe in just getting a belt. We believe in earning it.
Kids forget or rush sometimes. That is normal. But it is important for parents to understand why we require chores. They are not just tasks. They are proof that what your child learns on the mat is showing up in daily life.
Parents often tell us they struggle to teach respect and initiative at home. Thoughtful completion of chores gives kids a chance to practice these values. It shows them they can follow through, contribute, and take responsibility. It either confirms they are living these values or gives them a chance to grow.
Rather than seeing the Chores List as a minor part of rank promotion, make it clear to your child that it is meaningful. Talk about it, guide them through it, and celebrate the effort, not just the result.
At Team Chip, every small habit counts. The mats are just the start. How your child applies what they learn every day is what truly matters.
