Teaching Kids to Love the Standard
Many positive traits have atrophied in today’s technology focused world, but perhaps none so much as personal excellence. We see it everywhere we go, most commonly perhaps, a lackadaisical and uninterested employee manning the self check out areas at the store. An overall sense of “eh, what does this work matter?” seems to be the song of the times.
But how did this happen? The old saying seems to ring true here “As the family goes, so goes the nation, and so goes the whole world in which we live.” We can conclude our attitudes about work are formed at home.
But take heart, excellence has only weakened, not died. If we, as parents, take the same initiative we want from all those around us to demonstrate and instill excellence into our children and future generations, we can turn the ship around.
“Easier said than done,” that's what you’re thinking, right? You’d be correct. Everything is easier in thought than action, but this issue commands action, and the action has to come from you as a parent! So when you go that extra mile and dust the ceiling fan, do it joyfully. When at the grocery store, purchase healthy foods, and do it with a smile. Love getting up on Sunday to go to church. Strive to be a pillar of that church. Your attitude about your duties will be contagious to your children. Set the standard of excellence for your portion of society.
Teach your children to love work and love family. Every effort put forth always works its way from the individual, to family, and finally God. Give them all your best with a glad heart and your children will see and follow.
